I was shooting some photos of my two girls the other day when my oldest daughter picked up the camera and started poppn' off. She has her own Fisher Price "my first camera" that she likes, but this was the first time she showed any interest in one of mine. At first I was a bit hesitant to let a 3.5 year old to use a big, heavy, and expensive camera, but shit where would I be if my pops didn't let me dissect, and play with his old AE-1. So I showed her how to hold it, where to put her trigger finger, and how to use her one eye to look through the view finder to see what it was that she wanted to shoot. She caught on pretty quick and shot this photo of me with her little sister that I will forever cherish.

Like most natural disasters there has been a few skateable obstacles that popped up from the Earthquake. Due to quick repairs and a heavy police presence we were not able to skate the freeway that got transformed into waves of concrete. My homie Guille did move the pile of tangled power line over and ollie this bar, with whats left of a collapsed building dangling in the back ground.

As most of you know by now there was an major 8.8 earthquake in Chile at 3:40am this morning. I was here in Santiago at my mother in-laws apartment on the 4th floor, with my wife and two daughters when it struck. I have been in a few minor tremors before to know that the only thing you can do is wait it out in a door way holding on to the frame. I was woken up from the slight shaking and grabbed my oldest daughter out of her bed when it proceeded to strengthen and went to the closest door way where I was met by my wife and youngest daughter who was just born last week. When we all gathered at the entrance to my mother in laws room is when it became really heavy. The power cut out and we were in the pitch black holding on to the wooden frame as the rest of the building shook and seemed like it was floating apart and about to crumble at any given second. With it continuing you to strengthen it began to be difficult to stand up, and my daughter started screaming in my arms while my wife and I were still reaming calm thinking that it had to end soon. The noise of the earth moving, shaking a 5 store brick apartment like is was a toy, along every possible thing in the house was being violently being smashed to the floor is a sound that I will never forget. I was beginning to anticipating the floor giving out or the roof above coming down. With out trying to sound heroic, I was picturing what I could do to try and save the fam or coming to grips of the reality that this might be are time. After three really long minutes of terror wifey and I were starting to panic, but it finally stopped, and we were able to find are way down stairs to safety.

As cheezy at it might sound, experiences like this make you realize really fast what is important in this short life.

Working on this MIA photo project a major goal is to incorporate all that is unique not only to the city but also the skate scene. One of the places that stuck instantly in my mind and that I wanted to make sure was in there is the Miami Marine Stadium aka Rooftops. I have shot a few photos there over the years, but I wanted to try and capture it from a different perspective, from above via helicopter. Like every project these day's we are on a tight budget, so I threw the idea out to Forrest and was instantly down to make it happen one way or another. After a few calls, price checks, and a little convincing of how amazing the photo would turn out he was down to pay for it with high hopes of getting the photos run in a mag so he could get paid back with the photo incentive. We had herd a rumor that you couldn't get up on the roof any more, so the day before we snuck in past the barb wire fence and security guard, and made sure it was all good. It was actually repaired a little bit from the last time I had been up, which was a good thing. A major catch to this, is that it is illegal to be there, and I have been kick out by both a full time security on land, and also by a police boat. So we had to time it out so that he wouldn't be getting kick out while we were in the air, and lose the cash on the chopper. So I dropped him off with a few water bottles and set off up to the airport, while he would wait an hour or so up there till we showed up in the air. The pilot was also a photographer and gave me a few tips. He really made it a point to explain that it was a lot harder than you would think. The chopper was almost constantly moving, and that usually the photographer only comes back with one or two usable photos. We took all the doors off so that I could shoot from both sides. This being my first time up in a Heli, it was a bit intimidating already let alone with no doors between me and the ground. The "hard than you think" comment that the pilot made was really true. There was a strong enough wind to where he could only stall in one spot for a short amount of time. So we kept circling around while Forrest was trying to crack off down below. I would have to time out at about where we were going to be at in relation to when Forrest was going to get him in the air, then get the appropriate lens on, frame it up, focus, expose, then reframe hoping to be in the right spot at the right time that Forrest was in the air. After about ten or fifteen circles I felt like I had what I was looking for and we broke out to cruise over the beach on the way back to the airport. I knew that I had gotten what I originally set out shoot, but it wasn't till I got back that the experience settled in, and I saw everything full size that I realized what it was that we created all from a random idea.

Kenny once told me that "organization is the key to life". As I have been digging through over ten years of film and digital files for the last few weeks looking for a few specific photos, this keeps ringing in the back of my head. Never having a real system of organizing my film I have been finding the randomest photos some how in the same sleeve or folder. I have seriously found a photo of Rupp in Canada 2002, Suski in Spain 2005, Tony Manfre in Miami 2004, Bam in New Zealand 2005, Sabback in Greece 2006, and Nesser in Chile 2007 some how all grouped together in the same folder. Now this my sound like an interesting and even entertaining walk down memory lane, but when you are trying to find one frame of 35mm from Miami in 2003 at 4 in the morning, it's not that tight. Only for the last few months I have been finally getting one system of filing my digital photos. In the past I would come up with a new way, and two weeks later I would be off it, but I have been using the new system for a few months now and it seems to be working. As far as getting all the film sorted out, I'm gonna wait till I get my office and an intern.

I was out in New York a few weeks ago to work on a project with Jahmal, and got to meet and shoot Andy briefly. Yesterday day I woke up to Jahmal's email regarding that day.

"That was the last time I seen him.
And I almost let him get away that day.. before you shot those photos
But something inside said call him back...
He had already left the shop.
When he answered my call... he was like sure, be right there.
I was so stoked Ian when we were shooting photos with him.
IM so stoked that I have that picture as a reference for a amazing memory..
that I will cherish for the rest of my life."

I am working on a new project for MIA and I need to dig up a few old gems in the film archives.
Joel was one of the first "sponsored" skaters that I shot with. He was really straight up and actually kind of harsh on the critique of anything that I showed him. At first I would be kind of bummed but I got used to it and it only made me get better. He always has dope photos due to his spot/trick/gear combo, and is down to try pretty much anything for a photo. Here is a print from when I was in the college darkroom of a switch crook at an extinct DTM flat bar circa 2000.
Digging through all this stuff I would notice the guys that shot and spent a lot of time with, Forrest, Selego, Joel, Nesser, Renaud... Looking back on all of the stuff that I have shot with Danny is a trip, cuz it's all so good. This switch back tail at the Jew rails is probably one of the better ones. I had to shoot it black and white and with out flashes due to the fact that I had been caught there before and I would go to jail if I got caught again. So I would hang out across the street, and when he would start getting into it I would run and pop off a few then retreat to the side walk where I couldn't get arrested. Reda asked me one day why I didn't shoot it in color, I guess he was thinking that it was a bail from a sequence (pre digi), or didn't know of my situation with the famous skate Synagogue, but I kind of like the raw timeless look of a BnW, Tri-X skate photo. I actully have a few photos on film of Dan that where shot right before his injuries(which he is now recoverd from) that were "lost" around the industry, but I have recently tracked them down and they should be coming out in Skateboarder soon.

It was pretty obvious that Adio needed a visual face lift. So I took it upon myself to help create a rough guide line that would evently turn into the new campaign, and over all look of the brand. The old style was so dark, layered, and truth be told, kind of harsh on the eye's. I felt like it needed to have the lights turned on in a simple, and breathalbe manner. To help simlpfy the look I made the decision to shoot all in natural light with a 50mm lens, and try and capture the over all feel of the spot/subject/session. Another aspect was not to focus on having a gnarly "stunt" being done for the ad, just something that looks more or less photogenic. I have shot about 8 of the ad's so far, and about half of them were thought out with the rest just happening naturally which is what we were going for. After shooting the photos I would make a crude lay out in photoshop to give to the office for some sort of ground work. Which they built upon, and made about 5o different versions before we all finally agreed with what you see below, and in the magazines. Much thanks to Chirs and Travis for helping mold this and seeing it through. Now I just need to get back from South America to see them in print.

BOMBING THE ANDES part three...mendoza

The drive from Valpariso through the Andes to Mendoza was amazing. We had a few loose canons that were getting rather wild in the van on the drive over, and I was a bit curious to what was going to happien when we had to drive through customs at the border.

Being some what in charge of this trip, the one who I was most preoccupied with making sure he was in order to pass through the border was Freddy. Driving though in a rental car is way more complicated then just flying in on an airplane landing and getting you passport stamped. You have to get certified documents from the rental car company, buy an insurance from a seperate company at the border, every one has to fill out 5 forms, and clear both country's customs before they let you in...Of course this whole process is in spanish only, with no real direction or order to it. By the time we finally get to the first customs agent 5 hrs later I was over it and stopped caring about dudes with beers and all that...I was talking to the agent explaining what we were doing ect, and he said his nephew skated, and that he reconsied Freddy from TV or a video. Freddy was physced, put down his Quilmes, and shook the dudes hand and gave him an autographed board and we were out. Funny how those things work out.

Jack and Mike-Mike were doing physical challengs where ever they could. Usually both would make it, but this time climing up the side of a bridge, Jack was the only sucessor as Mike-Mike got scared and climbed back down.

We didn't have any loc to show us around for the two days we were in Mendoza, which was not too bad being that most of the spots are in the plaza's that are all over the city. We did stumble upon this old, crusty, ramp. You could see were the coping used to be, but was taking out to sell the metal. There was a pit under the bridge in the back that had about 50 used condoms spread all over the floor. The flat bottom of the ramp was bairly even ride able, with mud puddles at the bottom of the trainy. Mike-Mike, and Freddy killed it.

On the way back to Santiago we stopped and went swimming at this lake at the bottom of the Andes. The water is from the melted snow and was super clean and pure.

Perfect way to end the trip.

I know you what you are thinking "damn Freddy's looking fat" but please note that he actually weighed in less than Shier and Clint.

This is the last photo I shot pre flash drama that would plague me for the rest of the trip. His board flew out into my flash breaking the bulb, lucky not over the barrier and into on going traffic 50ft below like Freddy's did minutes before. Anyways, I brought a spare bulb, which was the wrong one even though the camera store assured me it was the one I needed. No, biggie I have been meaning to get a back up flash and now was the time. So I found a small used camera store in Vina that had what I was looking for, but by the time I got there it was closed so I would have to return in the morning.

On the way back to the hotel we found these perfect hubbas that were at the city hall. The crew was fired up and started skating before I could even break out my "let's come back when I can shoot photos" speech. Being the city hall in South America there was the security guard inside freaking out and he eventually called the real police to deal with the scene we had created, 10 gringos, grinding down hubba's, a van basting 36mafia, random 40's laying around, and about 50 bystanders gathered around to see what the hell was going on. The real police showed up about 10 minutes later, some one yelled cops and we all made like Carl Luis and literally jumped into the van in under 5 seconds and took off. We thought we made a clean get away for about 2 blocks then were cornered off by the same cops we just dipped from. Me being the only spanish speaker I was asked to get out of the van to deal with the situation. Policia in latin countries are usually pretty mellow, but they can basically do what ever they want, so I played the easy role of dumb gringo and he let us go just promising that we would never return to the city hall. Shier thanked me later for breaking my flash, if not we would have never, found that spot, had that experience, or these bnw low light photos that I was forced to shoot but that I like more than if I had all my normal working gear.

I invited a random crew to do a little trip to around Chile and into Mendoza, Argentina. It was originally only going to be a few heads, but it snow balled into a crew of 10 over night. I wasn't sure if it was going to happen but they all showed up one way or another...B Brown, TJ, Shier Mate, Mike-Mike, Bender, Clint, Sabback, Freddy, and Joey P to video capture it all. If you know any of these characters then you could imagine the chaos of putting them all together in South America. The trip is almost over, but I have not had much time to post any photos, so here are a few from Santiago.

James heard of a marble plaza in a small town called Fata about 2hrs out of bogota, so we drove out to the town asked directions to the plaza and proceeded with gringo invasion.

The local news came out to interview us...
The town had a huge crew of local skaters that showed us the few spots that they had outside of the plaza.
